Tax Assessor

Mission Statement – An uncompromising commitment to excellence.  The staff is dedicated to providing fair, equitable, accurate and timely assessments, exceptional public service and working together as a team for the betterment of our community.

Fire Districts and Property Information - The fire district for each property is given on the property record card, along with the fire district collector’s phone number.  This district information is on the lower right with the land information.  Property record cards can be accessed through the online database.  Click here to access the Assessor’s Database.

Plat Maps - Coventry uses a GIS system for all Town maps.  Click here to access GIS.  We also publish a PDF of all plat maps as of the prior December 31.  The link can be found in the attachment list on the right of this page.

Responsibilities - The Tax Assessor’s Office is responsible for the annual assessment and preparation of regular and special tax rolls, which include real estate, motor vehicle excise, and business personal property.  The General Laws of Rhode Island require the Assessor to ensure that all assessments are fair and equitable.  The office is an integral part of the Finance Department wherein property tax assessments are continuously maintained to ensure that the Tax Collector has the most accurate and current information for the collection of taxes in a timely manner.  The staff is responsible for all clerical functions performed in the update and maintenance of annual tax records, including reading and analyzing deeds, updating ownership records and mailing addresses, processing exemption applications, classification and certification of farm, forest and open space land, mailing and processing business personal property returns, maintaining current information on the Town’s tax maps, reviewing tax appeals, and providing various types of information to a multitude of customers.  All Town fire districts utilize the Town’s assessed values; however, they are separate taxing authorities and they will bill and collect fire district taxes independently.

Exemptions – The form listing available tax exemptions is given in the list of attachments on the right of this webpage.  Details of which exemptions were given on a specific property are listed on the tax roll, also in the attachment list.  The tax roll is ordered by ownership and lists the owner, mailing address, location, assessment, exemptions and tax amount for each property in the Town.  The roll is searchable, simply use CTRL-F and enter the search term in the box that opens.

Revaluations – The General Laws of the State of Rhode Island State mandate that cities and towns perform full revaluations of all classes of real property every nine (9) years, and a statistical update of all property values every third and sixth year thereafter.  The Town of Coventry completed a full revaluation effective as of December 31, 2016 for the 2017 tax bill.  Current assessments in Coventry are based upon the market as of December 31, 2019.  The Town has recently commenced the statistical revaluation that will be effective as of December 31, 2022.
