The Administration continues to work on the FY 27 Budget and reviews the monthly budget to actual transaction logs to provide the Council with the most up to date information as they look to pass the Budget on May 5.
The Library was closed to the public on Tuesday so all staff could take part in an all-day training and development session. The Library continues to provide the community high level service and is committed to expanding its program offerings. Please check it out.
On Tuesday the Council held a Budget meeting to adopt a Provisional Budget as we head into the Public Budget hearings which will take place on April 28 and May 5. Also, on the agenda was a Proclamation to Police Officer Jason Green for his response to the active shooter incident in Pawtucket. Officer Green was able to locate and secure the Coventry High School hockey team along with the relatives and friends in attendance at that horrific scene. We thank him for his dedication and compassion.
A big topic on Tuesday was the status of the Oak Haven Elementary School. The Council began a discussion on all Town owned property and if there is a way to monetize these parcels and buildings by selling them, if legally allowed, or repurposing them. We will soon be providing the Council all the information on selling the old Teen Center, if they choose, which has been vacant for years and with only one parking spot and in poor condition has limited use to the Town. Oak Haven School is currently under the care of the School Department who houses there IT Department along with their facility maintenance division including all of their equipment. This is an active work site with 14 employees. The deed to the school needs more legal research prior to making any decision on whether the Council will entertain selling it. More to come on that when we are provided the information as it pertains to ownership and transferability.
On Thursday Congressman Magaziner made a visit to Town to announce the grant of $1.25m for reconstruction of Wood St and $750k to design, engineer, and build a new Municipal Collection Facility. This project has been in the works for over a decade. We thank him for his diligence in securing these 2 funding streams for all of Coventry.
