PLANNING COMMISSION PUBLIC HEARING
AMENDMENT TO HOUSING AND LAND USE CHAPTERS OF LOCALLY ADOPTED 2026 COMPREHENSIVE PLAN
The Coventry Planning Commission will conduct a Public Hearing to gather public feedback on a proposed amendment to the Housing and Land Use Chapters of the locally adopted 2026 Comprehensive Plan. This is the first step in the process to amend a Comprehensive Plan described in RIGL § 45-22.2-8, in which the Planning Commission will provide a recommendation to the Coventry Town Council.
The Planning Commission Public Hearing will be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at 6:30 pm in the Coventry Town Council Chambers, 1670 Flat River Road, Coventry, RI. As an additional courtesy, the Town intends to make the meeting available for public participation using Zoom Video Conference Technology to provide potential remote access to the deliberations of the Coventry Planning Commission.

The DRAFT Housing Chapter Update provides a profile and assessment of local housing needs, an analysis of barriers to housing development, a new implementation matrix with goals, policies, and action items, and an updated affordable housing production plan. An additional DRAFT revision to the existing Land Use Chapter will provide an updated buildout and housing capacity analysis for future residential growth.
As background, the Town Council voted to adopt a new Comprehensive Plan on June 9, 2026. That Plan is currently being reviewed by Statewide Planning to receive State approval, which will take several months. The DRAFT updates to the Housing and Land Use Chapter is being reviewed in parallel fashion with the State’s review of the full 2026 Comprehensive Plan as it stands now.
The DRAFT Housing and Land Use Chapters will be accessible for review at the following Town webpage: https://coventryri.gov/comprehensive-plan. Individuals can also review hard copies of both DRAFT Chapters at the Planning Department office, 1675 Flat River Road, Coventry, RI, on regular work days from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
Please feel free to email your comments on the DRAFT Housing and Land Use Chapter Updates to Doug McLean, Director of Planning and Development, at dmclean@coventryri.gov. All emailed comments will be incorporated into the public record on the Comprehensive Plan amendment process, and will be considered as part of the Town’s ongoing review of this important document.
All interested persons will have an opportunity to offer verbal comments on the DRAFT Housing and Land Use Chapter Updates at the Public Hearing on August 26th. Please be advised, these DRAFT chapters may be revised by the Planning Commission as a result of further study and/or views expressed at said hearing.
As a next step, then the Town Council will conduct its own Public Hearing on the DRAFT Housing and Land Use Chapter Updates. As of the date of this publication, no such Town Council Public Hearing(s) have been scheduled. Such a Town Council Hearing will be subject to additional public notice in the form of a subsequent newspaper advertisement like this one.
