The Meal Site Kitchen Lead oversees the food service operations of the Coventry Meal Site, part of the Coventry Resource and Senior Center. The Meal Site is open to the public and primarily serves older adults and adults with disabilities. Food service duties include but are not limited to: kitchen and dining sanitation, food preparation and serving, and food safety compliance management according to the Rhode Island Department of Health’s standards.

This role also provides on-ground direction for the Meal Site’s robust team of food service volunteers, and assists with administrative functions such as ordering, reservation management, and deposit preparation. The Kitchen Lead also assists with program logistics including weekly bingo sales, program room scheduling, and event preparation.

The Kitchen Lead must be able to obtain and retain Rhode Island Department of Health Food Safety Manager certification.

The ideal candidate is a professional, dependable, and friendly team player with experience working with older adults and/or adults with disabilities. As this role is part of the Human Services team, the candidate must be a good communicator who will treat the service population with kindness, patience, and care.

Supervision

Employee works under the general supervision of the Program Coordinator. Employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently. New or unusual assignments are explained by the Program Coordinator, including suggested work methods. Employee refers unusual situations to the Program Coordinator for advice and further instructions. Program Coordinator reviews work only to an extent sufficient to ensure that completed work, methods used are technically accurate, and that instructions are being followed.

Job Environment:

Numerous standardized practices, procedures, or general instructions govern the work and, in some cases, may require additional interpretation. Employee uses judgment to locate, select, and apply the most pertinent practice, procedure, regulation, or guideline to use in a given situation. The sequence of work and/or the procedures followed vary according to the nature of the transaction and/or information involved, or sought, in a particular situation.

The position has frequent contact with the public in person, in writing, and on the telephone, to respond to inquiries or requests. Other contacts are with other town employees, vendors, and various agencies and officials.

Essential Functions:

· Receive, temp, hold, assemble, and serve food prepared offsite according to the Rhode Island Department of Health’s standards.

· Maintain a high standard of kitchen and dining hygiene by performing regular sanitation of food- and customer-contact surfaces including countertops, tables, and chairs.

· Provide direction for the Meal Site’s food service volunteers and assist with scheduling and hours tracking as needed.

· Perform Meal Site administrative functions as needed including ordering, inventory management, reservation management, arrivals check-in, daily announcements, and deposit preparation.

· Assist with Meals on Wheels distribution coordination.

· Perform standard customer service functions such as answering the phone, processing messages, and assisting with inquiries.

· Conduct weekly bingo sales in conjunction with the Program Coordinator.

· Perform the Meal Site’s Snack Shop functions as needed including item sales, hot beverage preparation, and sanitation.

· Assist with program logistics including room scheduling and event preparation.

· Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Culinary Arts, Nutrition, Health and Wellness, Social Services, a healthcare discipline, or a related field with at least one year of professional customer service experience.

A minimum of three years of professional experience in food service, nutrition, health and wellness, social services, healthcare, or a related field may be considered in lieu of an associate’s degree.

Administrative experience, ServSafe certification, and experience working with older adults, adults with disabilities, and volunteers are preferred.

Physical Requirements

The Kitchen Lead operates in a moderately noisy setting with normal vision requirements. The employee must be able to lift up to 30 lbs., stand and sit for extended periods of time, reach for items on shelving units, and bend from the waist to conduct surface sanitation. The employee must also be able to operate commercial kitchen appliances, safely handle kitchen utensils, and operate standard office equipment such as a telephone and copier.

Work Location: In person

 

Pay: $19.08 per hr.
